Sasikumar appointed as new MD of SBT
i. CR Sasikumar has taken over as Managing Director of State Bank of Travancore (SBT), one of the associate banks of State Bank of India (SBI).
ii. Prior to the present posting in SBT, he was Deputy Managing Director, Inspection & Management Audit, at SBI Corporate Centre in Hyderabad.
iii. State Bank of Travancore (SBT), is a subsidiary of the State Bank Group and also has private shareholders. It is the premier bank of Kerala, India
Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali Dies At 74
ii. Ali had suffered for three decades from Parkinson’s Disease, a progressive neurological condition that slowly robbed him of both his legendary verbal grace and his physical dexterity.
iii. He also wrote several best-selling books about his career, including The Greatest: My Own Story and The Soul of a Butterfly.
Odisha becomes first state to give social welfare benefits to transgender community
i. Odisha is first in the country to give transgender people social welfare benefits – such as a pension, housing and food grains.
ii. This move seeks to give the transgender community in the state same benefits as those living below the poverty line (BPL) in order to improve their overall social and economic status.
iii. They would also be entitled 5 kg of food grains every month under National Food Security Act.
IBC Gets Affiliation From Commonwealth Boxing Council
i. The Indian Boxing Council ( IBC ), a licensing body for professional boxers in the country which has Vijender Singh among others on its roster, has been granted affiliation by the Commonwealth Boxing Council.
ii. It is a National Boxing Governing body that sanctions professional boxing matches and awards national and subordinate championship titles.
iii. It is the first time in India where there is an opportunity for the Boxers to be professional. It also aims to promote and serve the sport of boxing, to implement fair, scientific and objective computerised systems.
Khattar inuagurates ‘Jai Jawan Awas Yojna’ to provide affordable housing to serving, retired JCOs
i. Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar laid the foundation stone of Jai Jawan Awas Yojna (JJAY), an initiative to provide affordable housing to serving and retired JCOs and Other Ranks at Bahadurgarh, Haryana.
ii. General Dalbir Singh, Chief of Army Staff was the Guest of Honour during the event.
iii. The project is being executed by Army Welfare Housing Organization and aims to provide low cost housing. This housing project has been named in the memory of Late Major Rajiv Joon, recipient of Ashok Chakra and Shaurya Chakra, who had attained martyrdom fighting militants in Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir.
V.O.Chidambaranar Port Bags National Award For Excellence In Cost Management
i. V.O. Chidambaranar Port has bagged National Award for Excellence in Cost Management for the year 2015 from The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) under the category of Public Service Sector- Small.
ii. This is the third time this port is receiving the award , the earlier years being 2008 and 2012.
iii. The award has been given for exemplary performance of V.O. Chidambaranar Port towards optimization of manpower, savings in electricity, implementation of Solar Energy Systems, reduction of overall cost of handling by mechanization and improvising efficiency and logistics support.
HDFC Ergo Buys L&T Insurance For Rs 551 crore
i. HDFC Ergo General Insurance, the insurance arm of mortgage lender HDFC, has acquired L&T General Insurance for Rs 551 crore.
ii. L&T General Insurance had reported gross earned premium (GEP) of Rs 483 crore for the last financial year, which puts the deal value at 1.14 times of the GEP.
iii. L&T General Insurance is a wholly-owned subsidiary of infrastructure and engineering major Larsen & Toubro.
Leander Paes wins to complete mixed doubles ‘Career Slam’
i. Veteran Indian tennis star Leander Paes completed a ‘Career Slam’ in mixed doubles with Swiss partner Martina Hingis with a hard-fought win over compatriot Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig, in Paris.
ii.It was 18th Grand Slam title for Paes and 10th in the mixed doubles.
iii. Defending champion Serena Williams will take on fourth seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in Women’s Singles final
